Writer’s Guidelines

Thank you for considering writing an article for the Network’s Connect Journal.

The Network exists to strengthen and empower adults who work with children, youth and families in service to Christ.

The journal is published online, with a new article coming out every two weeks.  Our articles serve to strengthen congregational ministry throughout Christ’s church.

  • Sometimes our articles are written with the intent of informing and educating.
  • Sometimes our articles are written to provoke thought, or to ask challenging questions.
  • Sometimes our articles are written to promote an idea or a concept that we believe the church needs to adopt.

Generally, the Network does not accept unsolicited submissions.

We believe in the value of what we publish, and we want to honor and compensate our writers for their work and their wisdom.

Our articles take several different formats:

  • Column:  500 words for $100 per column
  • Medium Length Article:  800-1000 words for $150
  • Longer Article:  1000+ words for $200
  • Journalistic Article:  $200 (may vary.  Written by a professional journalist)

The Network’s typical request is for a medium length article.  We have found that articles in the 800-1000 word range generally have the highest readership and response rate.  Longer articles are only published at the request of the editorial team.

Once written, the article can be submitted to the editorial team member who contacted you about writing the article.

The Network publishes articles every two weeks.  The deadline for publication is generally two to four weeks ahead of publishing.  Your contact person will let you know when that is.

Once an article is received, it will be edited by the journal’s copy editor.  If the editor’s changes are grammatical or cosmetic, we will generally just make those changes.  If the changes are substantive, you will be given the opportunity to review those changes and approve them prior to publication.

Payment for the writing is made at the time of publication.

After the article is published, the Network and the article’s author both share in ownership of the article.  Both the Network and the author are welcome to submit publish or re-publish the article in other venues.  However, when re-published, credit should be given, stating “article originally published in the Connect Journal, the online publication of the ELCA Youth Ministry Network” with a link back to the original published article in Connect, whenever possible.
